Porter-Loomis-White

In 1638 John Porter (b. 1594) and his wife, Anna White, came to America from England on the ship
"Susan & Ellen". Also on board were his brother-in-law, Joseph Loomis & wife, Mary (White), sister of Anna.
They settled in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut.

Both Mary White and her sister, Anna White are my ancestors. In 1730 at Farmington, CT,
these two families became connected with the marriage of Jeremiah Curtiss and Hannah Burnham.
Jeremiah was the Great Grandson of Anna White Porter and Hannah was the
Great Great Granddaughter of Mary White Loomis, making Jeremiah and Hannah 3rd cousins, once removed.

According to an item in the June-August 1990 issue of NEHGS' "Nexus" newsletter,
Anna White Porter became the ancestor of Presidents Ulyses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland and Gerald Ford
and Mary White Loomis had President Millard Fillmore as one of her descendants.

Joseph Loomis, son of John Loomis and Agnes Lyngwood, was a woolen-draper in Braintree, Essex Co, England. He sailed from London on 11 Apr 1638 on the "Susan and Ellen" with his wife and children and arrived at Boston 17 Jul 1638. He stayed about a year in Dorchester, Mass.then arrived in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT where town records show he was granted a plantation in 1640.
