The Family of Samuel ORGAN
& Sarah Simpson
Samuel Organ, his wife, Sarah Simpson and their
family, resided in Halifax County, Virginia during the late 1700s.
His parents
haven't been
found. It's possible his father was John Organ who enlisted as a member
of the
VA troops in the French &
Indian Wars. John's
occupation was that of Carpenter,
an occupation found in this line
through many generations.
Samuel's first child, John Organ, owned a grist mill, sawmill, blacksmith shop and a
store in Campbell County VA.
He was a County Commissioner of Revenue from
1811 through 1813 and a trustee of the town of Marysville
in 1817. On record is
a
payment of $8 to Major John Organ from Thomas Jefferson
to survey his lines at
Poplar Forest, paid 27 Nov 1817.
Enoch Organ went to Wilson County, Tennessee, the same time as
his brothers (1810) and is on the 1820 census
there. Shortly after that, he moved to Lawrence Co., Illinois, and settled on
Section 36. He built and operated
the
first cotton gin in that county. In 1845 he died of Black Tongue when an epidemic
swept the Indiana prairies.
Robert Organ also planned to go with his brothers to Wilson
County, Tennessee, but did not leave in 1810
as they did.
He died about 1820 when the time came to leave but his wife, Sarah, made the trip
with their several children and lived in Tennessee the rest of her life.
The census for 1810 shows Ennis
Organ living in Campbell County, Virginia. By the 1820 census
he is in
Wilson County,
TN.,
where he died in 1832. He was evidently a close friend of
his wife's family,
the William Robertsons.
One of her brother's children is named
Ennis Robertson and Ennis
Organ was a bondsman
for the marriage
of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Robertson, to Thomas Bottoms.
Cornelius Organ went to Wilson County, TN., about 1810 when some of
his brothers moved there. He married
there in 1816. Probably he helped his widowed sister-in-law, Sarah (Hubbard) Organ,
whose
husband, Robert, died shortly before the move to Tennessee.
Melinda Organ married Mordicai Gilbert in 1811 and moved to Muscatine County, Iowa, where
this couple lived
and raised their family. The Gilberts became prominent early
settlers
of the area.
They are buried in the Gilbert Family Cemetery there.
Charlotte Organ married William Dudley in Halifax Co., VA.,
and is mentioned in the deed
records
as a daughter of Samuel Organ. Recently, Lisa Pemberton, shared her
research on
Charlotte's and William's children and grandchildren. This meant all of Samuel's
children now have some documentation for this Organ genealogy.
Simpson Organ was one of the
brothers who went to Wilson County, TN., in 1810. He served in the War of
1812
and became a coroner in the county. After he and Sina Wilson
were married, they raised a family -
then everyone
moved to Wayne Co., IL., where they lived the rest of their lives.
Celia Organ married Peter Gill
and stayed in Halifax County, VA., where her father lived until his death in
1813.
Celia and Peter had several children but died before 1850 which made their
family information difficult
to find.
Their daughter, Mary Gill, and her husband, Hamilton Douglas, went to Wilson County,
TN., about 1834.
Raleigh Organ was a popular
member of the family as can be shown by the number of nephews and grandchildren
who bear the Raleigh/Rolla name. He went to Tennessee in 1810.
His first wife died after giving
birth to
his son, James, and Raleigh
married again. About 1860 he moved to
Saline County, IL, where
he
died in 1863. Many of his descendants still live in Wilson Co., Tenn.
Bennett Organ went to Wilson County, Tennessee, but later
moved to Missouri where he married and
lived until
his death
which occurred before 1844.
Elizabeth Organ married William
Dobson and stayed in Virginia, living in Botetourt County. Their
daughter, Martha,
married
a well-known minister of the gospel and also lived in Botetourt County, VA.
