Deed of Legatees of John Gill –
July Court 1819
THIS INDENTURE made this 24th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and nineteen, Between the Legatees of John GILL, Dec'd, of the County
of Halifax and Commonwealth of Virginia of the One Part and Peter GILL of the
same County and Commonwealth aforesaid, of the Other Part,
Witnesseth: that the said Legatees for and in consideration of One hundred and
Fifty Pounds good and lawful money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said
Peter GILL, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged & thereof doth
acquit & discharge the said Peter GILL, by these presents they the above
mentioned Legatees have bargained, sold and confirmed unto him the said Peter
GILL his heirs and assigns forever, one certain Tract or parcel of Land lying
and being in the abovenamed County of Halifax on the South side of Banister
River and containing One hundred and Fifty acres be the same more or less, and
bounded as followeth (viz):
Beginning at a white oak on the River in Daniel KING's line, thence along his
lines south seventeen degrees west one hundred & forty poles to pointers in
Adams' line, thence along John CREWS' line 147 degrees east 112 poles to a pine
in the said CREWS' line thence along his line east 140 poles to a white oak on
the said River Bank, thence up the River as it meanders to the Beginning, and
all trees, woods, ways and watercourse therein contained and all profits
advantages and appurtenances whatsoever to the Same belonging or in anywise
appurtaining thereunto; They the said Legatees for themselves and their heirs
doth covenant and agree to and with the said Peter GILL that they the said
Legatees and their heirs the said Tract or parcel of Land and premises
abovementioned unto the said Peter GILL his heirs and assigns against them the
said Legatees their heirs and assigns and against the Claim or Claims of all
and every person or person whatsoever.
In Witness whereof the said Legatees have each of them set their hands and
affixed their seals the day & year above written:

wit:
We, Dudley GLASS and Peter RIVAS magistrates for the County of Halifax
aforesaid do hereby certify that William KING and Elizabeth, his wife; John
HAGOOD and Susannah, his wife; John HAGOOD, Junr, and Nancy, his wife; Francis
GILL, Sarah GILL, William GILL and Clarkey GILL, parties to the within Deed of
Conveyance, personally appeared before us in our said County and acknowledged
the same to be their hands and seals, acts and deed and requested us to certify
the acknowledgment aforesaid to the Clerk of Halifax aforesaid in order that
the same may be recorded. We also certify that Elizabeth KING, wife of Wm.
KING, Susannah HAGOOD, wife of John HAGOOD and Nancy HAGOOD, wife of John
HAGOOD, Jr., came before us privately and apart from their husbands and
acknowledged that they had freely and voluntarily signed the within Deed of
Conveyance and was willing the same should be recorded and not wish to retract
it.
