-------

Death claimed what is probably Clinton county’s oldest pioneer, yesterday afternoon, when

Mrs. Hannah Jane Chittick passed away at the home of her son, W. S. Chittick, near Geetingsville,

after a brief illness.  She had lived in Clinton county continuously since 1833 when the county itself

was but three years old, and has witnessed its transition from an unfenced wilderness to one of the

fairest garden spots of all Indiana.

Mrs. Chittick was nearing her 96th birthday, having been born July 21, 1822.   She was the

oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Compton and was born in Virginia.   The family moved to

Wayne county, Indiana, when she was seven years old and, after a year, they came on to Clinton county,

which was just being settled at that time.   They lived for a time two miles north of Frankfort and then

moved to near Rossville, where she lived until she married Archibald Chittick in 1847.   Since that time

she had lived on the farm where her death occurred.

In 1853 the husband was attracted by the gold discovery in California and went to the new

Eldorado by way of the Isthmus of Panama.  On the way he fell a victim to the dreaded yellow fever

but recovered and finally reached his destination.   Being shrewd and energetic, he made a success

in mining and returned a few years later, well repaid for his labors.

Mrs. Chittick was the mother of seven children, of whom five are still living, two daughters having

preceded her in death.   Her husband died 24 years ago, his death occurring in the same month and on

the same day as hers.

            The surviving sons are Dr. Charles Chittick of Frankfort; James Chittick of Bass Lake;

A. M. Chittick of Flora; and W. S. Chittick who lives on the home place near Geetingsville.   The only

surviving daughter is Mrs. Pauline Weids, of Geetingsville.   Twenty-one grandchildren and several

great-grandchildren also hold her in affectionate remembrance.

For many years Mrs. Chittick was a member of the Presbyterian church at Geetingsville and

her funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:30.   Burial will follow in the Chittick cemetery.
